Evan’s New Room

Posted by: jzelazny | 2 Comments

Evan's BedLast week we were busy getting Evan’s new room ready. We wanted to make it special so we Let him help paint, and then bought Wall-E stickers for the wall and put his computer on his new desk. He loves having the computer in his room and he also loves his sweet Wall-E stickers. He took the move very well (we are making his old room into the twin’s new room since it is better suited for two) and has never had put up any fight or even questioned the move. He enjoyed helping set everything up and moving things from one room to the other. I think it is a great “big boy” room!

Check out the new photos of his room.

First Stripe in Taekwondo

Posted by: jzelazny | 0 Comments

TaekwondoEvan has been taking Taekwondo for a month now and yesterday at his class – he got his first stripe on his belt. (They give it to kids that complete one month of the class. He was quite excited to get it and wore his belt with pride. He enjoys the stuff he learns in class (mostly stretching, exercises, and an occasional kick or punch move). Classes are not the easiest as he is the youngest in the class and the least likely to listen to the teacher – but he is getting better each class. During the rest of the week Amy and I work with him so that he can actually follow the teacher better at the next class. If anyone wants to see him in action – his classes are on Wednesday mornings at 1030am in Palatine!

Old Habits Are Apparently Hard to Break

Posted by: jzelazny | 1 Comment

ER VistLast night was going to be the first Thursday that I did not see any ER action since it’s first episode 15 years ago. Apparently there was one last (hopefully) Thursday night ER drama that had to unfold. It was 630pm – I just got Evan out of the bathtub and into his pajamas while Amy was getting ready for ballet. Evan was playing in his room while I was cleaning up the bathroom.

Amy was in the living room. The next thing we heard was a loud bang and then Evan crying. (Evan is not usually one to cry so you know if he is something is bad.) I was the first on to get into his room. He was standing up by his changing table and I did an initial scan to make sure he had all his teeth and was not bleeding. No blood so I was happy. Amy rushed in and said “oh my god look at his head!!” and I looked and look and did not know what she was talking about. She then told me to look at his forehead where there was a growing by the second lump over his eye that was getting more black and blue as it grew.

Amy and I decided as soon as it kept getting bigger and bigger (like someone put a bouncy ball under his skin) that we needed to call 911. Amy got on the phone and got him some ice (which he screamed more about using that than the actual injury) and I tried to keep it on his head. The fire company and ambulance arrived within a few minutes and as soon as Evan saw the 5 men come in the house he stopped crying and wanted to give them all high fives and see the fire truck. Of course Amy and I are the ones crying now.

The guys checked him out, tried to give him ice for his head, but Evan was more interested in wanting to show them his room “Come on man, come on man” as he was going to his room with me to get his shoes. The guys then let him go sit in the ambulance where they decided it was best to go to the ER to get it checked out.

We waited a few hours to get checked out and the entire time Evan was thankfully himself – greeting everyone, running around, and all around happy (and very tired). We came home, put him to bed and then checked on him every 2-3 hours to make sure he was responsive. He is now in the livingroom with Amy watching TV and is doing great.

On a side note – last night I decided to try out my magnesium stick, flint, and fire making skills before this all happened in the backyard in our fire pit. After many unsuccessful tries I just used some matches and started a little fire to burn some of the hundreds of twigs in our backyard. Before I went inside – I grabbed the hose, put it out, and then gave Evan his bath. When the fire department was getting ready to leave they asked me if I left my grill on because it was still smoking and then jokingly said “because we would not want to have to come out here again”. I said yes because I was not sure if there was a time/day that you could have a fire going and so I went in the backyard hoping they would not see it was a fire pit. I grabbed the hose, filled the pit with water this time, and as it was going out – one of them walked back, but thankfully did not say anything (probably because my son was in the ambulance.

What a night!

Evan and the Easter Bunny

Posted by: jzelazny | 0 Comments

Amy and I dropped Evan off on Saturday evening with our babysitter Denise so that we could go out to a friend’s house for a party. We left Evan there for the night and when we picked him up in the morning – he gave both Amy and I a picture of him and the Easter Bunny as well as a big photo of the occasion to hang up. (Thanks Denise – that was extremely thoughtful!)

At Christmas – Evan was scared to death of Santa and cried hysterically when we took him to see him. This time though – apparently he was super excited, gave him a high five, and was talking to him non-stop. Let’s hope this means this year’s picture with Santa will be more pleasant.

Bye Bye Crib

Posted by: jzelazny | 0 Comments

Bye CribFor the past week Evan has been sleeping on a twin size bed and since his super sweet car bed is getting delivered today – I decided to take down the crib last night. Evan enjoyed time in his “cage” while I took it apart. It is hard to believe Evan no longer has a crib…and when that piece of furniture enters his room again it will be with he is probably around 12 and wanting a full bed. I cannot wait to see the look on his face when he sees that his bed is a car (I have a good idea what it will be because I have always wanted one too. 😉 )

No More Crib?

Posted by: jzelazny | 0 Comments

Last night I put Evan to bed in his crib and then went in my bedroom to watch a little Guiding Light. A few minutes into my show – I heard Evan talking and then about 15 minutes or so later he started to call for me. I went with the intention of rocking him for a few minutes and then putting him back in his crib.

As I was rocking him I was talking to him about how George (Curious George) and Diego both sleep in a big boy bed and he said “Yes” to confirm it. I then asked him if he wanted to sleep in his big boy bed and he again said “Yes”. I then picked him up, put him in the big boy bed (twin) he has in his room and laid down next to him so he would be more apt to stay in the bed.

We talked, sang songs quietly and then he finally got to a point after about an hour or so of being tired enough where I felt I could get up and he would stay still.

I went into his bedroom this morning to wake him up and he was still in the same spot on his bed (he is a flip flopper). I told him how proud I was of him, got him up and then started our normal routine.

I am hoping tonight he will also want to sleep in it so in a few days when his sweet car bed gets in – we can move the crib out of the room for good.

That’s Me!

Evan’s latest trick is looking at pictures and being able to recognize himself. He will look at the pictures, think about it for a second intensely and then with much excitement say “that’s me.” It is really cute 😉

Evan’s New Cousin: Hunter Thomas Ambrose

Posted by: jzelazny | 0 Comments

Hunter AmbroseThis morning Evan’s aunt Jule had a baby who she and uncle Dan named Hunter Thomas Ambrose (6lb 9oz born around 3am). I think Hunter looks like Julie – and I look forward to more pictures. We are all excited to meet him and to get to know him. Mommy is excited to teach Hunter all kinds of sweet tricks to make his mom’s life more interesting! Evan will also have fun with another cousin and will surely make family visits more interesting and fun. Thank goodness Julie had her iPhone with her to take this picture! Congratulations Julie and Dan!

A Few Notable Occurances

Posted by: jzelazny | 0 Comments

In the past week – Evan has done two major things that should be noted.

  1. First Skinned Knee. Evan got his first skinned knee after falling on the cement driveway. A few tears, but nothing crazy.
  2. Evan Can Open Doors. I had to take E to the doctors office and there he surprised me by opening the office door and walking out into the hall while we waited for the doctor. Evan is so tall – he can even reach our dead bolt…but I do not think he is tall enough to turn it. Let the fun begin.

Fun times! I am hoping over Memorial Day weekend we can take him to his first parade as well!
