evan’s first doctor’s appointment.

Firsts Just Evan

Our first appointment was scheduled for Friday, but we ended up in the office this afternoon. I noticed during Evan’s morning feeding that his eyes looked yellow (jaundice), which I had just read about in one of the 500 books we have on our dining room table. So Jen called the office and they wanted to see him and just make sure it was not a problem since he is so young. We went to our appointment at 2:30 and being the new parents we are we noticed halfway there that we forgot a diaper bag. So I was just hoping that Evan had and kept his diaper clean for the appointment. (Needless to say I came right home and fixed up the diaper bags and two extra to leave in each of our cars :)). Anyway…it is common for babies this age to be jaundice, but the nurse practitioner wanted to make sure it was not above the limit so we got back in the car to head out to the lab for blood work (another side-note…Evan was starving from not eating since a quick snack in the doctors office for 5 minutes and it was now way past three). We went to the lab and they took the blood and now we just wait.
If the numbers come back high – above 18 – (the NP thought it would probably be 10 or 12 – Evan was a 5 at the hospital on Day 1) then someone would come to the house with the treatment – a special blanket I believe. It was also recommended to feed him every two hours – so my life now revolves around feeding baby Evan – but I will do anything to make him better. Feel free to call or email if you have more questions – I have gone on enough.

Sound like the the man is settling in nicely. Anni and Will both had different degrees of jaundice. Will had the light blanket and that help, however I had to stop nursing for a few days as there was some component in my milk that cauased the jaundice to worsen. Don’t mean to worry you, I don’t think it is too common, but if he is not improving you might ask the doc about it.

Hope EC Grandma is having fun. I’m feeling the need to hold Ev, so I may request an appointment soon!

Well the doc did not think anything was necessary more than frequent feeding….so every two hours it is. Hopefully he will be better in the next few days – we go back for a checkup tomorrow. Thanks for sharing your experience. Give us a call whenever you want to visit.

Sorry to hear the little man had to go to the doctor a few days early. I hope everything works out for you guys. I was lol when I read the part about not bringing a diaper bag though. Although I’m sure there would have been supplies at the doctors office if you needed them
