Our first appointment was scheduled for Friday, but we ended up in the office this afternoon. I noticed during Evan’s morning feeding that his eyes looked yellow (jaundice), which I had just read about in one of the 500 books we have on our dining room table. So Jen called the office and they wanted to see him and just make sure it was not a problem since he is so young. We went to our appointment at 2:30 and being the new parents we are we noticed halfway there that we forgot a diaper bag. So I was just hoping that Evan had and kept his diaper clean for the appointment. (Needless to say I came right home and fixed up the diaper bags and two extra to leave in each of our cars :)). Anyway…it is common for babies this age to be jaundice, but the nurse practitioner wanted to make sure it was not above the limit so we got back in the car to head out to the lab for blood work (another side-note…Evan was starving from not eating since a quick snack in the doctors office for 5 minutes and it was now way past three). We went to the lab and they took the blood and now we just wait.
If the numbers come back high – above 18 – (the NP thought it would probably be 10 or 12 – Evan was a 5 at the hospital on Day 1) then someone would come to the house with the treatment – a special blanket I believe. It was also recommended to feed him every two hours – so my life now revolves around feeding baby Evan – but I will do anything to make him better. Feel free to call or email if you have more questions – I have gone on enough.
